How I Use ChatGPT For My Writing Business as a Freelance Copywriter

For as long as I can remember, I have loved the challenge of facing a blank screen and filling it with words that connect, captivate, and coax. To give you context, I completed 20 years as a content writer and freelance copywriter in India this June 2025, and the journey has been incredible, with experience across 30+ industries and copywriting clients in over 15 countriesHowever, all of a sudden, in almost a heartbeat, things began to change, as with numerous other content writers, with the launch of AI, specifically ChatGPT. Let’s say, ChatGPT for copywriters came as a shock.

Clients began to drift away, new inquiries dwindled, and suddenly, copywriters became unnecessary as more and more people turned to ChatGPT for content creation. It seemed as though everyone was now searching for ‘how to use ChatGPT for copywriting’, ‘ChatGPT for copywriters’, and the only thing needed was the right ChatGPT prompts for copywriting – and we could be well on our way to creating content that was once only possible for human copywriters.

As you can imagine, this unexpected shift of gears was enough to throw any professional copywriter off the bus. I, too, faced a lot of insecurities and questions about ‘what’s next?’ And what I figured out follows…

Human vs AI Content Writing: AI Tools for Writers

As a content writer, I have always loved the rhythm of crafting original content that stems from my psyche. Finding the perfect words that only I can craft, the ideal angle that only I can give, and the perfect tone that only I can capture to fit the audience. But with ChatGPT taking over the ropes, that feeling of novelty that was once my domain had started losing its sheen, thanks to the sea of prompts available and the ability of people to create AI-generated content in a split second.

Clearly, it was time to confront the elephant in the room and determine how and to what extent ChatGPT, or for that matter, any other AI tool, should be integrated into my work life, and if that even exists anymore!

At first, I was skeptical about allowing AI even a tiny bit of space in my sacred world of content creation. “After all, I was doing just fine without AI,” I retorted whenever I thought about allowing entry to this unknown monster, ready to devour all that I hold dear in my career. However, over time, I realized I needed to find a way to integrate AI into my work and figure out how to utilize ChatGPT for copywriters without feeling threatened by it.

Of course, the update from Google regarding its search guidelines about AI-generated content cleared up quite a few doubts, too, where, though it recognized the usefulness of AI, it also made it clear that using AI “to generate content with the primary purpose of manipulating ranking in search results is a violation of our spam policies.”

Not just that. Google still prioritizes content that demonstrates the qualities of E-E-A-T –

  • Expertise
  • Experience
  • Authoritativeness
  • Trustworthiness

And we all know only too well by now that AI content lacks the ‘human touch’, no matter how much you train it to think or write like a human.

So, what role does AI or ChatGPT play in my professional content writing services, and how do I leverage it to enhance my writing and support my work without compromising the ‘Akanksha-ness’ that I am known for?

Let’s take a look at how ChatGPT works for copywriters, such as me –

5 Ways I Use ChatGPT as a Copywriter

1. My Brainstorming Buddy

For me, ChatGPT is primarily a thought buddy I never had or thought I needed. It helps me brainstorm before the start of a project and sets the tone for what’s to come. So instead of working out the flow of the content like I did on my own for the longest time, I now have a sounding board that helps me collect my thoughts and gives me the space just to be and build from there.

Every project begins with an idea that requires further development. Before starting to write a blog post or website content, I often jot down random thoughts and ask open-ended questions to explore angles I might not have considered. As I shape my thoughts and give them my unique direction and twist, I have a brainstorming buddy who is quick to help me with new ideas.

2. My Complexity Simplifier

Every writer knows only too well the dilemma of working on specialized or complex topics. In the pre-AI era, we would spend hours researching different sources and understanding complex topics before we could get even close to the point of writing. Now I turn to GPT as a learning tool to break down complex topics into digestible chunks, summarise topics, and explain varied concepts to me in simple language, helping me learn before I write. Once I grasp the topic from all possible angles, it becomes easier to write faster and more accurately.

3. My Idea Perfecter

Some of the most high-performing content takes shape with one great idea. But just having an idea isn’t enough. It also has to be brought to life correctly. Let’s say I have a direction I want to give to a piece of content or a topic that is still in its nascent stage. Before getting my idea to life, I may use ChatGPT to refine it by removing irregularities and unnecessary fluff. It’s like having an experienced teacher or coach by your side, helping you become the best version of yourself.

4. My SEO Supporter

When writing SEO content, I often consider a couple of headline or subhead options before finalizing on one. In such times, I turn to AI to help me generate different versions of titles, descriptions, and headlines based on my shortlisted SEO keywords. It’s a great way to explore alternatives and possible variations, allowing me to finalize the best one. Let’s say I am writing a blog post with the keyword ‘Freelance Copywriter India‘. Using ChatGPT, I generate 5-10 title options and then rewrite them, blending SEO with creativity and incorporating ‘Akanksha-ness’ into the mix.

5. My Research Assistant

What seemed like a giant task – researching – has now become faster and simpler with ChatGPT.  Instead of visiting numerous websites to collect relevant information, I now use GPT to conduct the research and present me with the most pertinent information that acts as a research resource for the content I write. Not just that. The process of fact-finding is more straightforward, too, and makes fact-based writing faster and easier. No wonder there is a growing popularity of ChatGPT for copywriters.

BONUS: There was a time when writers were advised to run their pieces by other people – friends and family – for an unbiased opinion. Not anymore. I use ChatGPT to gain an objective view of my first draft, identify content gaps, and suggest improvements.

With the growing popularity of AI tools and their entry into all aspects of our lives, it is safe to say that they are here to stay. However, tools alone cannot create magic. And in my case, copywriting magic!

Closing Thoughts

I’m not denying that ChatGPT is a powerful tool for copywriters. In fact, many feel that ChatGPT for copywriters is the best thing that could happen to create content faster. However, it’s still just a tool. The real copywriting magic happens when a piece of copy is written with emotions, empathy, and experience, and that is something a human writer brings to the mix. For me, ChatGPT does not replace my creative process; it enhances it, giving it a new twist.

By collaborating with ChatGPT as a brainstorming companion, simplifying expert, idea perfecter, SEO, and research support, I can accomplish tasks more efficiently while preserving my authenticity. AI helps me with the mundane tasks as I focus on what’s more important – the storytelling and connection through words.
